He was appointed as a Midshipman in the Imperial Russian Navy 1813.
He was appointed as a Lieutenant (IRN).
In 1817-19 he sailed around the world with V.M. Golovnin in the sloop Kamchatka.
In 1821-24 he led an expedition to Novaja Zemla, the eastern Barents Sea and the White Sea.
He was appointed as a Admiral (IRN) in 1855.
