(He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He arrived in Victoria in 1854 as Second Officer of the Esat India ship Marqui of Bute which was under charter to the HBC.
He traded in the Society Islands for a number of years returning to San Francisco in 1858.
He took command in 1859 of the bark Ann Parry.
He took the ship Revere for twenty years and then to the ship Richard III. which he commanded for six years.
He then took command of the collier Costa Rica in the Nanaimo coal trade.
