He was living in St. Catharines ON at the time of his recruitment. After working as a surveyor with the Departments of Highways and Fisheries, at the age of 39 he enrolled in the UBC School of Law graduating with his LLB in 1963 and opened his law office on Denman Street (Vancouver) in 1964.

He had service with the RCAF and RAF in World War II as a Radar Technician. (Transferred to RCNVR).
He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate UNTD) RCNVR 1945. (He was demobilized.) He was appointed as an Ordinary Seaman (Officer Candidate UNTD) RCN(R) 1945.
He served in HMCS Cataraqui for UNTD 1945-1948.
He served in the Supply and Secretariat Course 1947. (CFR) He was appointed as a Naval Cadet (UNTD) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 1948).
He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (S) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 06/02/1949).
He was appointed as an A/Sub-Lieutenant (S) RCN(R) (With seniority dated 06/02/1950). (He was released.)
