He was ordained as a Priest in the Church of England in 1816.
He was the Canon of Norwich 1834.
He was also a well known geologist.
In 1818 he was appointed as the Woodward Professor of Geology at Cambridge University.
He was President of the Geological Society in 1831 and received its Wollaston Medal in 1851 and the Copley Medal in 1863.
In 1834 he was the Canon of Norwich.
