He was appointed as a Commander RN.
In 1989 he commanded H.M.S. Tireless when she completed a polar transit of the Northwest Passage.
In 1991 he commanded H.M.S. Tireless when she completed a partial submerged transit of the North West Passage and surfaced at he North Pole in rendezvous with USS Pargo (SSN-650).
They remained on the surface for 24 hours and the two crews played a cricket match.
