He emigrated to California for the Gold Rush of 1849.
He arrived in Victoria and opened a lumber yard at Victoria in 1858.
In 1861 he acquired the sawmill at Mill Bay and in 1868 the Shawnigan Lake Lumber Co.
He opened a sawmill in 1863 at Cowichan.
