Biographie

He came to Canada about 1907.

In 1941 he was a boat builder in Prince Rupert BC.

He was the father of Hedy Suehiro. Laura Fukumoto stated "My great grandfather was Yutaka Suehiro from Prince Rupert, BC.

He came to Canada in 1907 thereabouts from Kagoshima, Japan. My grandmother who is alive and well at 102 (with the braids, in the family photo I have linked below) says that her father left Japan after being accused of getting a girl pregnant, and being told by a bunch of retired samurai that they would kill him if they ever found him. Whoops! He began as a train porter, and then found his way to boat building in Cow Bay by 1915-1916.

He was trained to build houses in Japan in the late 1800s." "Some spellings from Canadian Census and Custodian Files show the last name written as "Suyehiro" and in fact, that is the more common spelling. My grandma says that her annoying older brother Hedy decided they would all spell their name more uniquely and drop the Y, even though he was wrong." The Landscapes of Injustice website states "Suehiro was born on 5 August 1885.

He was a self-employed boat carpenter. His family includes Nori Suehiro (wife) and Jiro Suehiro (son; born 1 July 1931).

He has three other children whose names do not appear in the file. His parents are listed as deceased and no names are provided. His home address is listed as 291 3rd Avenue, Prince Rupert, BC.

He was forcibly uprooted to Slocan, BC, to Madigan Farm, Fort Erie, ON and then to 50 Seaforth Avenue, Toronto ON on 3 July 1947. His listed seized property includes a boat building shed located at #5 Cow Bay on land leased from Prince Rupert municipality, the boat “Four Brothers, No. 2” sold to Robert Smith of Port Simpson who then sold it to Cassiar Packing Company Limited, a Kodak Brownie Jr camera, a Kodak Bullet camera, tools, and household belongings."
