He was the first European to sight Victoria and Esquimalt harbours.

Alferez de Navio (Sub-Lieutenant) Royal Spanish Navy.
He commanded captured sloop Princessa Real in 1790 during an important voyage of HMCS Discovery around Vancouver Island.
In 1790 Manuel Quimper accompanied the Concepcion and the San Carlos to HMCS Nootka in the Princessa Real (formerly Princess Royal).
