Biography
He was the only son of the late W.illiam Adolph Baillie-Grohman whose books on the Tyrol, where late in life he inherited the beautiful Schloss Matzen, near Innsbruck.
He was an authority on big game shooting and on medieval hunting.
Military Service
He was appointed as a Naval Cadet RN in 1903 at H.M.S. Britannia..
He was appointed as a Midshipman RN (With seniority dated 30/11/1904).
He served in H.M.S. Prince of Wales in 1907.
He was appointed as a Sub-Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 30/01/1908).
He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN (With seniority dated 30/07/1909).
He was appointed as a Lieutenant-Commander RN (With seniority dated 30/07/1917).
He was appointed as a Commander RN (With seniority dated 30/06/1923).
He was appointed as Senior Officer First RN Minesweeping Flotilla Persian Gulf 1922-1923.
He was on loan to the Royal Austalian Navy as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff in the Navy Office in Melbourne Australia 1925-1927.
He took the Staff Course at the Military Staff College Camberley in 1928.
He was appointed as a Captain RN in 1930.
He was on loan to the Navy of the Republic of China as Head of the British Naval Mission to China and as Instructor to the Navy of the Republic of China 1931-1933.
He was appointed as the Commanding Officer First Destroyer Flotilla Mediteranean 1934-1936.
He served in H.M.S. St. Vincent (In command) and as Commanding Officer of the Boys Training Establishment 1936-1938.
He served in H.M.S. Ramillies (In command) 1939.
He was appointed as AdC to HM the King 1940.
He was appointed as a Rear-Admiral RN in 1941 attached to the Staff of the General Officer Commanding Middle East.
He was assigned to Combined Operations in 1942.
He was appointed as a Vice-Admiral RN(With seniority dated 07/11/1943).(He was retired 07/11/1943 due to illness but recovered to hold two shore-based commands at the end of the war.) He was appointed as Flag Officer-in-Command Harwich in 1945.
He was appointed as Flag Officer-in-Command Schlesweig Holstein in 1945-1946. (He was retired.)
