He was a packer in California 1849-61 He married William Manson's daughter.
He settled at Shuswap Prairie pre-empting land near what is now Kamloops.
He worked for a time as partner of Whitfield Chase, before selling out to him.
He moved to a ranch at Barnhart Vale.
