He was descended from United Empire Loyalist stock.
He married a daughter of James Robb.
He was the father of the wife of Senator Planta of Nanaimo.
He was elected as the Liberal Conservative Member of Parliament for Vancouver in 1882 defeating Arthur Bunster.
He was re-elected in 1887 and 1891.
He did not run again in 1893.
