He entered the Royal Navy in 1844.
He was appointed as a Midshipman RN in 1847 serving in H.M.S. Eagle serving in boats in the Rio de la Plata.
He was appointed to H.M.S. Pilot as Acting Mate in capture of Chinese War Junks 1850.
He was appointed as a Mate RN and served in H.M.S. Herald on the Pacific Station from 1852-54.
He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1854 and Commander RN in 1863.
He served in H.M.S. Osborne (In command) in 1865.
He was appointed as a Captain RN in 1869 and served in H.M.S. Adventure (In command) in 1874 and in H.M.S. Jumna (In command) from 1875-78.
