He was orphaned at age 14 when his father, an army officer, was killed in the Battle of Plascencia on 15/06/1746.
He was raised by his uncle, a priest in the Extramadura.

He enetered the Spanish army in 1750, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1755. During this time he read the first 15 books of Euclid and became a specialist in artillery. Appointed as a teacher at the Naval Academy and transfered to sea service.
He developed a reputation as an astronomer and mathemetician.
He travelled extensively in the Mediterranean especially in Italy.
He undertook a survey of the ports and coast of Spain and North Africa 1783-8 concentrating on Majorca, Minorca and Ibeza in 1786 and Portugal and Galicia in 1788.
He was often consulted by cartographers and hydrographers from other nations such as French and Portugese Academies of Science.
He was appointed to the Spanish Naval Academy in 1787.
He retired as a Rear-Admiral.
