He was the son of the Superintendent of the Hastings Sawmill.
He worked for the Hastings Mill starting as a young boy.
In 1928 the Mill closed so he worked for a number of different mills.
In 1936 he joined the MacMillan Export Co. as Yard Foreman and Shipper in the Alberni Pacific Division of the Victoria Lumber & Manufacturing Co. Ltd.
He was appointed as the General Manager of the Victoria Lumber & Manufacturing Co. Ltd.
