He went to sea in the Norwegian coastal trade on a vessel owned by his father.
He served in deep sea vessel worldwide until 1880.
In 1880 he arrived in San Francisco CA USA on the ship Three Brothers. (He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He served in coasting schooners out of San Francisco CA.
In 1887 he arrived on the sealing schooner Lillie L.
He served in the Rosie Olsen and Mary Ellen.
He was the Master of the sealer City of San Diego based out of Victoria BC in the late 1880s.
In 1892 he served in the Emma Louise as Master.
In 1893-94 he served as Master of the Allie I. Alger out of Seattle WA USA.
