Walters, John V.

Biography

(He was qualified as a Master Mariner.) He went to sea at age 14, sailing primarily in the Pacific and decided to settle in and work out of Vancouver in 1889.

In 1897 he received his Master Mariner papers (for coastal waters) and worked for the Union Steamship Co. for 8 years (during the Klondike Gold Rush).

In 1906 he joined in a partnership with Charlie Mowat, Norm Tofte and Mr. Dickson (chief engineer) as owners of the Progressive Steamboat Company.

They sold the company in 1920 and under this new ownership it became Blue Band Navigation in 1921.

In 1921-1922 he was based in Vancouver BC. At some later date, John Walters owned the Alert in partnership with Mr Johnson.

He continued to work on tugs as a captain for the Vancouver Tug Boat Co. until 1935.

He retired just months before his 80th birthday.
