He voyaged in 1585 with the vessels Sunneshine and Mooneshine to the Arctic sponsored by merchants of London and the West Country.
He made landfall in Greenland and then on to Baffin Island. Noting tidal currents in the islands he surmised the possibility of the existence of a Northwest Passage route to an ocean to the west. In 1586 a second voyage he travelled to Greenalnd and turned south to Labrador returning home with a cargo of cod. A third voyage in 1587 he returned with three vessels; two for fishing and one for exploring. His discovereies were incorporated into the maps and globes of the day which expanded the areas known to cartographers in the Eastern Arctic.
He was killed in abattle ith pirates near what is now Singapore.
