Biografie
He was one of the greatest polar explorers who carried out work in both the North and South Polar regions.
In 1906 he transited the Northwest Passage through James Ross Strait and Simpson Strait for the first time with a crew of six in a herring schooner the Gjoa.
They left secretly in order to avoid creditors.
He travelled through Peel Sound.
He wintered two winters at Gjoa Haven and another winter at the mouth of the Mackenzie River.
He had planned to drift over the North Pole in 1909 in the Fram but the news of Peary's success in reaching the North Pole motivated him to turn south to Antarctica and the reaching of the South Pole.
He disappeared in 1928 during a flight to rescue Umberto Nobile during his flight in the Arctic in the dirigible Italia. No trace of Amundsen was found.
