Holroyd, John C.

He was born in a warden's cabin.

He attended school in Waterton Lakes National Park and did Grade 12 in Pincher Creek AB.

He was the Assistant Park Warden in the Minnewanka District in Banff National Park 1958-61.

In 1961-64 he was the District Warden in the Kootenay Crossing District of Kootenay National Park.

He was appointed as the Assistant Chief Park Warden of Banff National Park in 1964-66.

In 1966-67 he was the Chief Park Warden and Superintendent of St. Lawrence Islands National Park.

In 1967-70 he was on Educational Leave at the University of Calgary, spending summers in the Western Regional Office of Parks Canada in Calgary AB working with K.B. Mitchell (in Operations) and Harry Webster (in Interpretation).

In 1970-73 he was appointed as the Chief Park Naturalist at Banff National Park.

He was appointed as the Superintendent of Pacific Rim National Park 1973-75.

In 1975-78 he was the Chief of Interpretation in the Western Regional Office of Parks Canada.

In 1978-86 he was the Chief of Natural Resource Conservation in the Western Regional Office of Parks Canada in Calgary AB.

He retired in 1986 and retired to Victoria BC. "My father was a Warden and Chief Warden in Waterton National Park for approximately 27 years, from 1919 to 1946 or 47, so I grew up very close to parks work. I was always hoping I might end up with an appointment in Waterton because I loved that country. It just didn't happen. My career was a mix of Warden Service, Interpretation Service and Administration. I'm not sorry I followed that pattern as it certainly included a lot of the most interesting aspects of park work. I'm also very glad I was there then rather than now (1998). Although I have not stayed very close to what is going on in parks, from all reports they are not particularly happy places. The emphasis seems to be on running parks as a business, elicitting the maximum revenue possible."
