He came to British Columbia in 1883.
He was appointed as the Assistant Curator of the British Columbia Provincial Museum in 1890.
In 1895 he accompanied Dr. C.F. Newcombe on a scientific voyage through the Queen Charlotte Islands.
He was appointed as the Curator in 1904 when published a major study of BC birds.
He married Margaret Allan Fowler, Vancouver BC.
He was appointed as the Director of the British Columbia Provincial Museum, retiring in 1940.
