He began steamboating in the Northwest in 1868 on the Fraser River as a deckhand on the steamer Hope, later on her as watchman and Mate.
He served in the Lillooet, Onward, Royal City, Reliance, Glenora, Gem.
He was master of the Victoria, Adelaide, Gladys.
