Servicio militar
He entered the Royal Navy in 1808.
He was appointed as a Lieutenant RN in 1823.
He was appointed as a Commander RN in 1841 and Captain RN in 1847.
He assisted Sir Francis Beaufort in the compilation of sailing directions and undertook surveys.
He retired in 1864 and promoted to Rear-Admiral (Retired) RN in 1865 and Vice-Admiral (Retired) RN in 1864.
