Anecdotes
Kimtah is a fiberglass trawler designed by Ed Monk Jr. and built by Garren Blakley in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1976. Ed Monk Jr. is one of the premier yacht designers in the northwest and Garren Blakley is best known for its line of 40 - 50 ft commercial fishing trawlers used thru-out British Columbia and Alaska. We purchased Kimtah in October 1998 and spent the summer of 1999 cruising from our home port of Anacortes, WA to Southeast Alaska and back. The following year we cruised thru-out British Columbia and The San Juan Islands of Washington and started preparations for retirement and cruising to Central America. In the winter of 2001-2002 Kimtah was hauled out, and we installed a new Northern Lights generator, hydraulic bow thruster, hydraulic anchor windlass, Spectra water maker, washer, dryer, dish washer, vacuflush toilet and pump-out. All electronics were updated and the canvas Bimini top was replaced with a fiberglass hard top. We completely rewired the boat and remodeled the interior with solid teak cabinets and Corian countertops. In June of 2002 we left Anacortes on a great six month cruise down the Pacific west coast (stopping at nearly all ports along the way) to arrived in San Diego in December. We left the USA in December and over the next 17 years cruised Central America (Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, Honduras and Belize) before returning to Key West Florida and cruising up the inter coastal waterway to Washington, DC and then back to the Rio Dulce, Guatemala, Belize, Florida and Georgia. Over the past 20 years of cruising, Kimtah has been maintained and upgraded with many improvements including active stabilizers, water-maker, single side band radio with email modem and solar panels." "In 2020 her home port is now Stoney Creek, MD, outside Baltimore on the Chesapeake Bay USA."
