In 1903-1911 she was a fisheries protection cruiser owned by the Canada Department of Marine & Fisheries, Ottawa ON Canada. In 1911 she was sold into service in the South Pacific. In 1914 she was owned by a firm in Honolulu HI as a merchantman. In 1915 she was owned by blackbirders.

Anecdotes
In 1907 this vessel was fitted with radio equipment. This vessel was equipped with a Nordenfeldt machine gun for fisheries service. In 1911 this vessel was damaged by fire. In 1914 this vessel was damaged by fire after a storm. In 1914 this vessel was completely rebuilt at Hawaii. In 1915, in a dark period of her history, this vessel was employed in kidnapping and enslaving Pacific islanders.
