In 1941 this vessel was seized from her Japanese owners by the Canadian Government. In 1942 her ownership transferred to His Majesty the King. On September 17, 1965 this seiner sank in Hecate Strait BC. This vessel was returning to Prince Rupert when heavy seas flooded the engine.THe fishboat Twinkle put a line aboard her but the seas were too heavy to tow the seiner. Then the Smith Sound capsized so quickly the crew did not have time to put on lifejackets. They didn't carry a liferaft and the skiff was full of gear. The crew jumped in the ocean together and Edward Bitman simply disappeared. |
